Environmentally-Beneficial Operations

Our power plant partner operates one of the most environmentally beneficial waste fired plants in the country. Our power source utilizes circulating fluidized bed (“CFB”) technology which enables the plants lower harmful emissions. Alkaline-rich ash, a beneficial by-product from the process, is returned to mine sites and utilized in environmental reclamation projects. Through this process our power partner has removed more than 36 million tons of refuse from the Pennsylvania landscape.
In 2015, Pennsylvania estimated that the cost to remediate Abandoned Mined Land and Acid Mine Drainage (“AMD”) sites in Pennsylvania could be as high as $20 billion, of which reclamation of culm refuse piles represented a $2 billion burden. These piles produce significant, adverse local and regional environmental consequences, including the harmful leaching of acidity, iron and iron oxide, aluminum, manganese and sulfate residues into waterways resulting in significant AMD. This leachate creates both surface water and groundwater contamination and produces streams, ponds and lakes that can be devoid of aquatic life. AMD is the largest non-point source water pollutant in these Pennsylvania communities and afflicted watersheds downstream from these waste piles, while also reducing potable water supplies.
Our energy supplier/partnership combined with the environmental benefits that accrue to the region, allow us to mine Bitcoin at low cost while supporting a transformational, positive contribution to the environment.
